About Young Tradition Festival

The 2024 Young Tradition Festival will take place May 10-12 in Burlington, VT. The Festival celebrates young artists and multi-generational relationships in diverse traditional music and dance communities. It also provides engaging opportunities for youth, families, and the greater community to become immersed and involved in traditional music and dance from many Vermont communities.

The Young Tradition Festival is one of several Living Traditions programs run by Vermont Folklife to support Vermonters as they practice and pass on traditional art forms that are vital and relevant to  their communities. These programs encourage youth to explore, learn, and perform traditional music and dance.

Young Tradition Festival’s Audience:

The goal of the Young Tradition Festival is to provide youth with a venue to perform, alongside their peers, mentors and professional musicians, and also to inspire youth who are not yet participating in traditional music and dance to engage with those art forms. We also seek to bring high-caliber musical performances from a range of cultural backgrounds to the community more broadly.

We anticipate a total of 3,500 to 4000 people participating in events between performers and audience members, of whom 800-1000 will be youth. Audience members will include locals with an interest in traditional music, this year also including those with a specific interest in Quebecois and/or Nepali music. We will also reach the majority of attendees to the Burlington Farmers Market through our Student/Mentor Showcase, as well as students at a local school and residents at a local retirement home.
